Ketchikan is located along the Tongass Narrows, at the foot of Deer Mountain, on Revillagigedo Island in Southeast Alaska about 90 miles (145 km) north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia. The average high temperature in July is 57 degrees Fahrenheit (14°C), and 33 degrees Fahrenheit (0.5°C) in January, with the average annual rainfall of about 155 inches. Ketchikan is built on stilts over Ketchikan Creek, which flows through town. It has been called the salmon capital of the world. The Misty Fjords National Monument is one of the area's major attractions. Ketchikan also has the world's largest collection of standing totem poles, located at three major locations: Saxman Village, Totem Bight State Historic Park, and the Totem Heritage Center.
